Seychelles, September 2019 – Each year, on 24 September, South Africans across the globe recognise Braai Day: a celebration of the rainbow nation’s favourite national pastime. This year, Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare invited Seychelles’ South African diaspora and industry professionals to celebrate Braai Day in the exclusive south-end of Mahé with an authentic wine and meat pairing.
The wine tasting was led by special guest speaker Niel Bester – an award-winning South African winemaker, who introduced the crowds to some of the top labels distributed across the islands by East Indies Co. Each wine was expertly paired with top cuts of meat sourced from South Africa and supplied by Apex Hotel Supplies.
The event was the first of its kind for the luxury hotel, which saw hotel guests seated side-by-side with the island’s top food and beverage professionals and members of the community, for a companionable, laid-back meal. Guests were invited to learn more about the wines on offer, as well as the South African wine industry and its reach into Seychelles.
“A braai – or barbecue – is an open invitation to people from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds to unite around a fire and enjoy a shared appreciation of good food, wine and good company,” said Kempinski Seychelles Resort’s executive chef, Hamzeh Abu El-Foul. “That was the ambience we hoped to create tonight and, judging by the feedback we’ve received, we managed to achieve just that.”
“In true Kempinski style, our team has created another beautiful performance for our guests, by combining our love of gastronomy with our curious nature to explore and embrace the unique customs of different destinations,” said General Manager Masami Egami. “We are grateful to our partners for their constant support and for helping create such a memorable celebration of social cohesion, tonight.”
The hotel commented that they are looking forward to hosting similar events in the future.
